Members vote for maximum

Christchurch’s Mayor, Ms Vicki Buck, will be paid an annual salary of $83,000. Christchurch City councillors and community board members will receive the maximum payments allowed within a range set by the Minister of Local Government. Councillors voted themselves the maximum last evening, voting out an amendment by Cr Oscar Alpers to approve only 75 per cent of the maximum pending a consultant’s report on workload and responsibility. The rates, which apply from November 1 thisyear, are: • Deputy Mayor and chairmen of committees — $,160 a day meeting allowance p’lus $28,000 salary. • Councillors — $l6O a day meeting allowance plus $14,000 salary. • Community board chairmen — $lOO a day meeting allowance plus $12,000 salary. • Community board members — $lOO a day meeting allowance plus $5400 salary. A person may receive only one of these salaries whereas in the past people have received more than one salary if they have held more than one position. Some councillors queried this. Cr Alpers said it would be sensible to have an independent assessment of whether the maximum levels were appropriate. Councillors opted instead for the maximum levels.
