Tough hockey clash

An inferior goal difference has forced Canterbury A into a semi-final confrontation with Auckland A tomorrow at the national men’s hockey tournament in Whangarei. Canterbury A and Wellington A drew their vital pool B match in the Challenge Shield section, 2-2, yesterday and Wellington finished at the head of the pool securing a semi-final place against Northland. Auckland, which had two massive wins in its

first two games almost came unstuck yesterday, scoring the only goal of the match against Northland five minutes from full-time. The Canterbury coach, Ewen Holstein, was disappointed at having to meet Auckland in the semi-finals, but Canterbury was still confident it could overcome the defending champion. Canterbury was a goal ahead after three minutes from a Chris Leslie pen-alty-corner.

Canterbury B was two goals down after eight minutes against Wanganui, but went to a 6-2 lead before eventually winning, 6-4. West Coast beat Wellington, 3-0, last night and that left Canterbury B at the top of its pool in the Newmans Trophy section and in a semi-final clash against Nelson. West Coast will play Auckland B in the other semi-final.
