Kiwi amateur leads
NZPA-AAP Melbourne An unknown Maori golfer — the only New Zealander in a field of 250 — is a leading qualifier at the Australian Amateur Golf Championship after the first round played at the Victoria Golf Club yesterday. Martin Tumata, aged 22, an orchard manager from South Auckland, is the only Kiwi representative after the other three members of the New Zealand team withdrew. “So I’m it," Tumata said after returning a two-under-par 70. Tumata grabbed the lead with a superb eagle three on Victoria’s 461 metre eighteenth hole after hitting two monstrous drives to the fringe of the green and then holing a 16m putt. He played the other 17 holes in par figures with birdies at eight and 15 and bogeys on nine and 14. He was one shot clear of West Australian Tony Mills, aged 18, son of the Perthbased professional, Peter, who was a former three-time Victorian P.G.A. winner.
