N.Z. hockey team ninth
The New Zealand junior women’s hockey team finished ninth at the inaugural Junior World Cup which finished in Ottawa on Saturday.
The New Zealand team won its last two classification games. On Friday it beat Chile, 2-1,-to enter the playoff for ninth place against the United States. New Zealand won that game 2-0.
The team will not be returning home empty handed. It won the Fair Play Trophy at the tournament.
Only two of the 12 teams competing — New Zealand and Canada — did not have
temorary suspensions recorded against them. But Canadian players received four warnings while New Zealand had a clean slate. After withstanding an early burst from the Americans at the start of the second half, New Zealand went into the lead with 12 minutes remaining. Jenny Turner broke down the right flank then sent in a perfect pass to the middle of the circle for Anna Lawrence to score. With two minutes remaining New Zealand dashed American dreams of a late
comeback when Lawrence picked up a penalty corner rebound and rammed the ball into the net. The tournament was won by West Germany which beat South Korea, 2-0, in the final. The Soviet Union beat the Netherlands, 4-3, for third place. Other results were:— For 5 and 6: China 4, Argentina 0. For 7 and 8: Canada 1, England 0. For 9 and 10: New Zealand 2, United States 0. For 11 and 12: Chile 1, Zimbabwe 0.
