Skilled batsmen chosen
A lineup of skilled batsmen dominate the Canterbury indoor cricket squad which was released yesterday. The 14-strong squad is still to be trimmed to 10 for the nationals in Palmerston North from September 22 to 27 and the coach, Gary Gardner, believes the side is capable of carrying away the championship that it was runner-up to last year. “Julian Marsh and David Bond have been batting well and Gary Thompson has been in exceptional form,” he said.
Two notable exceptions from the squad are Steve Booth and Brendon Fahey. Mr Gardner, along with the other selectors, Brian Andrews and Wilfe Lock, considered their form “below last year’s standard." Steele won the batting trophy at the nationals lasf year. Chris Harris, who is in England with the New Zealand outdoor cricket youth team, has also been included in spite of his absence. “Chris played most of the super league matches and he
is too good to leave out,” said Mr Gardner. “But out of the 14 players they are all great strokemakers.”
The squad is: Mick Worley, Dave Anderson, Alan Fibbes (Sockburn); Julian Marsh, David Bond, Mark (Ted) Nicoll, Craig Williamson, Pete Steele, Phil Harris (Howzat); Gary Thompson (Papanui); Brett Saunders (Canterbury Court); Gary Saunders (Russley); Chris Harris (Bowlerama); Brian Ford (North Canterbury). z
