Linwood Intermediate wins ‘Press’ chess

Linwood Intermediate School, runner-up in last year’s final of “The Press” intermediate schools chess teams’ competition, went one better yesterday when it won its first title at Chisnallwood Intermediate School. Linwood started with a clean sweep against Chisnallwood in the round-robin final; beat Merrin School, 3-2, with Dean Seymour gaining a vital victory in the deciding game on board four; and finished with a 4-1 triumph against the defending champion, Medbury School. All five Linwood players contributed important wins to the team’s over-all success, but its middle-order strength was the decisive factor. The only female player, Keryn Miller, won her three games on board three and Seymour was unbeaten on board four.

Apart from Miller and Seymour, Michael Spiller, the Medbury No. 2, was the only player to win all three contests. The best of the top board players was Daniel Wallace, of Merrin, who had two wins and a draw. Final points:— Linwood 3 (12), Medbury 2 (8), Merrin 1 Chisnallwood 0 (2i/ 2 ).
