Friend’s move fails

PA Sydney

The New Zealand rugby league halfback Clayton Friend’s planned move to English club Leigh has fallen through and his present club, North Sydney, has shown little obvious interest in retaining his services next season. Friend has had a chequered year, spending much of the Sydney premiership season on the reserves bench and losing his test spot to Gary Freeman after being subtituted at half-time in the first test against Australia earlier this month. Last month Friend said the deal with Leigh — which has been promoted to the English first division for the coming season — required only the “fine print” to be finalised. But yesterday he said he was unsure why the deal had failed except that Leigh may not have taken the transfer fee of about sAustBo,ooo ($NZ102,600) into account.
