Plane fares set to rise next week

By LES BLOXHAM Travellers planning flights to Australia, Asia, and the Pacific Islands could save hundreds of dollars if they buy their tickets before Tuesday. Fares on these routes will go up by as much as 7.5 per cent, but any tickets issued and paid for before August 1, irrespective of the date of travel, will remain at existing levels.

The increase will vary depending on the route and the class of travel. For instance, a normal round-trip Christchurch-

Sydney economy ticket will go up 5 per cent, from $1024 to $1076. A similar type of ticket between Christchurch and Hong Kong will cost an extra $290 — up 7.5 per cent on the present price of $3886.

A Christchurch-Singa-pore round-trip ticket (normal economy) will go up $230;, ChristchurchFiji return by $lOO. Fares to Japan, Tahiti, and other Pacific destinations except Hawaii and the United States will also rise.
