Cries alert pair to fire in house
By
NEIL CLARKSON
The cries of a young woman who alerted a sleeping couple to a fire in their Phillipstown Home may have saved their lives. The couple, believed to be in their 50s crawled on their hands and knees through their smoke-filled home to escape. The dark-haired woman who alerted the pair could not be traced last evening. It was uncertain if she was a neighbour or a passer-by.
The wooden house was badly damaged in the
fire, which was reported just after 10 p.m. Four fire engines were sent and two high-pres-sure hoses were used to bring the fire quickly under control.
It appeared centred in the lounge and spread into the ceiling space'. Smoke damage was extensive.
Fears were held at first that the couple had not escaped the blaze, but they were found standing on the footpath. Neighbours said the couple appeared in shock and were awaiting the arrival of a doctor.
