Rodger hits at fraud report

Wellington reporter The Minister for StateOwned Enterprises, Mr Rodger, says the AuditorGeneral’s report on rising Public Service fraud is an over-reaction. The Auditor-General, Mr Brian Tyler, said this week that a “dramatic increase” in Public Service fraud had occurred in the last year, apparently because of publicsector management reforms. Of the 45 cases identified, Mr Rodger said 15 had involved the central Government sector, and only six departments were involved. About 24 had been in local government, and six were in “other corporations.”

Mr Rodger said he deplored any incidence of fraud, but appeared to criticise Mr Tyler’s choice of words, saying he had used the word fraud “in its wider sense and covered a range of infringements covering very serious offences to relatively minor matters.” Mr Rodger welcomed the Audit Office’s diligence, and plans further action to strengthen antifraud procedure. He noted that Mr Tyler had supported the general thrust of the new publicsector reform.
