Pioneer unbeaten

After two days of the New Zealand interclub volleyball championships in Auckland, the champion club in both men’s and women’s sections, Pioneer, of Christchurch, remains unbeaten. The Pioneer men have looked impressive with straight-sets wins over Eagles (Wellington), Rongotai, Shirley and Northcote and are assured of a semi-final spot. In the other section Sparta (Auckland) appears likely to finish first, but was hard pushed by Vikings (Dunedin), clawing its way to a desperate, 17-16, win in the fifth set. The Pioneer women’s side has beaten Vikings, Kavalagi (Auckland), Porirua and Kawerau, and should finish top in its section. In the other group Aranui Smash showed good form to beat Te Puke, Shirley, Voltec (Wellington) and Valley United (Wellington) and will play Akarana today for top honours in the section.
