The Gloucester

Sir,—l assure J. R. Quince (July 20) that city planning, like making paintings, requires a coordination of all the parts before attention is given to details. The city is perhaps fortunate that Mr Quince is involved in neither profession. Tower blocks cover a minimal area of ground, but other solutions are possible; for example, motels like those lining Papanui Road, or "town houses,” since few people are likely to build family mansions in the central city these days; or we could have an uncontrolled mixture. Town houses can be very effective in small groups, but to eventually fill several hectares with them might pose problems. En masse, they could resemble a compound, if not a ghetto. Incidentally, I look to more recent exemplars than Mr Quince’s Victorian hero, Pugin; and moats, unless securely fenced, might not be permitted under the regulations.—Yours, etc.,

W. A. SUTTON. July 21, 1989.
