Simple life
Sir,—The July 20 feature article by Colin Bryant about a pensioner, Bob Downes, in Shropshire, England, who subsists on meagre fare without modern conveniences in an old cottage in the hills provided food for thought. Mr Downes is apparently content with his lot, and I am sure many pensioners in both Britain and New Zealand envy him. I have lived in so-called sub-standard (older) accommodation (I prefer to call it uncomplicated) and have found it much more comfortable and userfriendly than many recently built homes for poor people. The trouble with today’s dwellings is that they are designed for women, and often by women, and are consequently unsuitable for men. I envy Mr Downes in his isolated Shropshire cottage because he does not have to worry about cleaning, cleaning, endless cleaning, and, best of all, he has no annoying neighbours to wear him out.—Yours, etc.,
TED HICKS. July 22, 1989.
