Ice marathon on

A strong ice surface on Lake Ida has encouraged the New Zealand Ice Racing Federation to hold the national marathon this Saturday. The whole of the lake is frozen over, with the ice thickness up to 22cm — the thickest since 1982, when it was 31cm. The total area under ice is about 17ha, which will be good news for the casual week-end skaters. The marathon will be held at the top end of the main lake over the standard distance of 42km on a 757 m course.
