Rana given ‘out’

NZPA-Reuter Karachi, Pakistan Shakoor Rana, the Pakistani cricket umpire involved in a bitter row with the England captain, Mike Gatting, on the Faisalabad pitch in 1987, will no longer stand in future tests after failing to attend a refresher course. “If an umpire does not turn up at a refresher seminar, it means he is not interested,” Arif Ali Khan Abbasi, the secretary of the Board for Control of Cricket in Pakistan (8.C.C.P.), said yesterday. “He will not be considered for umpiring in test matches.” But Mr Abbasi said Mr Rana had not been dismissed. “There is no question of sacking when the B.C.C.P. did not hold any examination," he said.
