Students' costs

Sir, —All four of our children graduated from the University of Canterbury between 1959 and 1974. Two of them gained additional professional qualifications in New Zealand and the other two gained advanced degrees overseas with the aid of scholarships and grants. All of them have given significant unpaid service to the community, apart from their paid employment. Our working-class income at the time just managed to keep them in bed and board, and they saw themselves through with vacation earnings and some part-time work. If the conditions anticipated for next year had prevailed then — high fees, a loan burden and a shortage of jobs — not one of them could have got started. The Government’s policy may save money, but it will waste people. — Yours, etc., ELSIE LOCKE. July 22, 1989.
