Now phone boxes

Sir, —I am surprised that New Zealand Telecom has ignored B. W. Mentink’s letter (July 12) on telephone booths. I was under the impression that Telecom was buying these booths, or part of them, from a large United Kingdom electronics manufacturer (Plessey, possibly), and not from British Telecom. The latter, to the best of my knowledge, is a non-manufacturing organisation, though it could act as an intermediary. The inference to be drawn from Mr Mentink’s objection to trading with countries half a world away is that New Zealand should no longer send her products to Europe. Incidentially, British telecom shops for its own hardware in the world market, buying wherever it judges the purchase to be most cost-effective. That may have something to do with its profits. — Yours, etc., D. P. K. RENNICK. July 21, 1989.
