Police praise boy’s actions

PA Auckland The police yesterday praised the actions of a 10-year-old Auckland boy whose description of a man seen tampering with a parked car enabled them to make an arrest Senior - Sergeant Paul Exton said the quick thinking and calm actions of the primary school pupil represented the sort of support the police needed. . “I was absolutely amazed at the maturity and responsibility he showed.” The boy, Sean Michael, was home from school at lunchtime on Monday when he saw a stranger trying to start a car parked at a nearby house. He knew the owners were overseas, so ran to get help from another neighbour who had been left with the key to the property. When he could not find help, he locked himself in his home and dialled 111. The man was fitting a battery to the car when the police, directed by Sean, arrived to make an arrest. A Balmoral man, aged 38, appeared in the District Court at Auckland yesterday charged with unlawfully taking a car. He was remanded on bail for one week.
