August opening for new courts

Christchurch’s new eight-level court complex is expected to open for sittings on August 14. The building was officially opened by the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer, on June 23, but work was still needed to ready the courts. The District Court registrar, Mr Bob Twidle, said work had been going on in minor technical areas, including installation of sound equipment, sound hoods for typewriters and the changing of some locks. The Justice Department still holds the lease over the Provincial Government Building, at the corner of Durham Street and Armagh Street. Mr Twidle said it would continue to be used for sittings of the Coroner’s Court and Children and Young Persons Court. < 1
