Shots 'aimed’ at fishermen

PA Wellington The police believe rifleshots aimed past two commercial fishermen longlining in a bay near Great Barrier Island on Monday came from someone living in the area. At least 17 shots fired over two hours are believed to have come from someone living in or near Blind Bay who objects to commercial fishing in the area. Although neither fisherman was hit, they said they could hear the bullets flying past. Senior Constable Shane Godinet, of Great Barrier,

said the fishermen had been working on an Auck-land-based longliner, which was fishing legally. Some of their gear had been cut and left to sink and two buoys had been smashed. Mr Godinet said the fishermen had indicated their unwillingness to visit the fishing spot again. “It is crazy for people to take things into their own hands,” he said. “Someone could have been badly hurt by this incident.” He believed the shots had been fired from a .22 rifle.
