Caller might hold key arson details

A mystery telephone caller may hold the key to solving the two attempts to burn down the new Hornby Police Station. A man called the police on Monday, but hung up abruptly after indicating he knew something about the incidents. The partly built $1 million station in Tower Street has been the target of arsonists twice in the last six weeks. Detectives investigating believe a local criminal element is responsible. The station will overlook a nearby hotel carpark, known as a site for cannabis dealing. Senior-Sergeant Dave Sandes is appealing for Monday’s caller to ring

back. “We won’t be seeking to find out who the caller is. We just want to talk to him,” he said. "If he wishes to speak in confidence, that’s fine.” Senior-Sergeant Sandes will not reveal what the man said during the brief conversation, only that he might have vital information. The police have had little response to requests for information from the community about the arsons. “We are looking to the community to help us on this one. Even the odd thing people may have overheard in a hotel might be helpful,” said Senior-Sergeant Sandes.
