Unions 'only opposition to Sunday trading’

By MICHAEL RENTOUL The New Brighton District Business Association says the only real opposition to Sunday trading is from trade unions. It says the act regulating the trading should be repealed. A spokesman for the association, Mr Tony Steadman, was commenting on the Shop Trading Hours Commission approving Sunday trading in Parnell, Auckland. The retailers opened for the first time on Sunday and declared the day a great success.

Mr Steadman said the commission was respond-

ing to public opinion in granting the application. The New Brighton association has had an application for Sunday trading before the commission for some months and is awaiting a hearing date. Mr Steadman said, “A poll of New Brighton shoppers, conducted some time ago, gave it overwhelming support The only real opposition is from the unions.

“In the face of public pressure the (Shop Trading Hours) Act should be repealed to let market forces prevail.”

New Brighton was a “logical choice,” for Sunday trading being a seaside suburb and the only shopping centre where the. public windowshopped on Sundays. Sunday shopping would complement any foreshore developments, he said. Mr Steadman said New Brighton retailers might be happy to open on Sunday for reduced hours, say 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. or 5 p.m.
