N.Z. cyclists dominate

NZPA-AAP Toowoomba New Zealand Commonwealth Games squad members dominated the first day of the Ford Golden West Cycle Tour at Charleville in central Queensland. The New Zealand squad is Paul Leitch, Stewart Imrie, Stuart Williams and Greg Fraine, riding for Toowoomba.

Imrie won the prologoue 4km individual time trial with Williams and Fraine second and third.

A young Sydney rider,

Mark Spessot, won the criterium by only three-tenths of a second from Leitch and Williams, with Russell Tucker (Piranha) fourth and Imrie fifth.

Spessot has Imrie and Williams breathing down his neck for the leadership. The criterium was run at a cracking pace with the lead continually changing hands. Mark Spessot, who conquered drug addiction through taking up cycling, is the young brother of the Commonwealth Games track

cyclist, David Spessot. Riding for the Twin Cities club, he claimed the yellow jersey by winning the 50km criterium at Charleville and finishing fourth in the opening 4km time trial prologue. The Twin Cities rider, Graham Seers, repeatedly threw down the challenge to the leaders and chased most of the riders who tried to break away. Spessot, who was one of the favourites for the race, timed his run to perfection to earn himself the leader’s jersey.
