Burnside High School and Christchurch Boys’ High School virtually booked placed in the final four for ths A grade of “The Press” teams’ chess competition with victories in the fifth round. Burnside beat Cashmere, 42, and Christchurch downed Christ’s College, 5-1. The lone winner for College was its No. 2, Andrew Blunt, who gained an adjudicated decision against the capable Jamie Kirk.

Chris Wright scored his third successive win on board three for Christchurch and the bottom trio, Matthew Wai Poi, John Jarvis and Peter

Abrahamson, all added to the total.

Andrew Jefferies, on board one, and his brother, Tim, on board three, scored their fourth successive wins for Burnside, and the No. 5, Adele Smaili, just failed to match their records. After three straight wins she got into a stalemate position against her opponent. Papanui and St Andrew's B, both with three wins from as many matches, have the lead in the two divisions of the B grade. Results:
