Three make chess final

Two of last year’s finalists, Medbury and Merrin, and Chisnallwood, which was runner-up in 1985, have qualified for the round-robin final of “The Press” intermediate schools chess tournament.

The fourth qualifier will not be known until two preliminary rounds at Linwood Intermediate this afternoon, but the host team won a crucial third-round match against Christchurch South and must be favoured to hold its advantage today.
