Former player dies
A former New Zealand rugby league player was killed in a head-on collision in North Canterbury on Monday evening. He was Leo Patrick Brown, aged 44, of Amberley. He was from the West Coast. He toured England and France with the Kiwis in 1965. He was also a prominent athlete, winning the Canterbury decathlon championship, and being runner-up at the New Zealand championship, in 1968. The Fire Service took about an hour to cut Mr Brown from the wreckage of his car, which collided with another vehicle on the Upper Sefton Road, near Balcairn. He was the sole occupant. The driver of the other car, Jennifer Pearl Ware, of Amberley, is in a comfortable condition in Christchurch Hospital.
