Dahl to music

Roald Dahl’s adventure story “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is to be presented by the Harlequin Players at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre during the schools’ mid-term break, from July 1 to July 8. The story has been adapted for the stage by Richard R. George of New York and will be performed as a full-scale musical production. As well as the nightly performances, beginning at 7 p.m., there will be matinees at 2 p.m. on both Saturdays. Harlequin Players have assembled a large cast of more than 50 actors, singers and dancers, both adults and children, to ensure a colourful spectacle.

The demanding role of Willie Wonka is played by Donald Bruce. A newcomer, Alexander Broom plays the part of the hero, Charlie. The production is directed by Glenys LloydSmith, with choreography by Trudy White. Hugh McCarroll designed the set.
