Collective’s ‘4x2’ show
The Christchurch Artists’ Collective’s first exhibition for 1989 — The “4X2” Show — opens on July 3 at La Quete Gallery, upstairs at 73 Manchester Street. These are the original rooms occupied and used by the collective in its first year of existence.
Sixteen artists from the collective will be exhibiting in the “4X2” Show, which refers to the space each artist has to exhibit in — 4m by 2m — and to the duration of the exhibition — two shows in four weeks. As well, the number of artists in each show is the multiple of four and two.
The subject is open and the space allotted each artist is the only restriction on the number of works. Each show will have its own opening night and a performance will be presented.
a The first show runs from July 3-15 and includes works by the artists Linda Barnes, Morag Brownlie, Paulina Currie, Adrianne Grkovic, Evelyn Hewlitt, Faye Hill, Christina Preston and Tony
Webster. The second show will run from July 17-29 and will feature works by Anneke De Leur, Peter Gilmore, Jules Goodger, Robyn Kilty, Belle Melzer, Gina Papageorge, Audrey
Parker and Julia Thom- ; son. i The collective, formed i in 1986, aims to provide i inexpensive gallery space < for Christchurch artists as I well as a support network < for visual and performing i
artists. It is active in promoting art in an “openminded and co-operative, non-commercial way” by operating on an at-cost basis without commission charges. It has more than 50 members.
