Jack Willis dies

PA Levin One of New Zealand’s best-known racing owners, Jack Willis, died in Levin at the week-end. Mr Willis owned many gallopers over the years. He was one of a select band of owners to have won 100 races. He attained his century of winners on May 16, 1987, when his jumper Stepson, prepared by Geoff Haigh, won a hurdles race at Foxton. Since then he has had further success and earlier this month one of his horses, That’s The Spirit, prepared by Bar-

ney Lumsden at Foxton, won at a Manawatu meeting. Mr Willis raced a number of good horses, including Duty Free which won a Stars Travel and later a Hawke’s Bay Cup. Speculation, which won a George Adams mile at Trentham, when trained by Maurice Campbell, was another top horse owned by Mr Willis. Other successful gallopers to race in the Willis colours were Kilroy, Second Duty and Scorching Bay.
