One dead, six hurt in P.N.G. clashes
NZPA-AAP Port Moresby One student died and six others were injured in week-end clashes with police in Papua New Guinea. A young man was killed when police raided a blackmarket liquor club on the fringe of the Lae campus of the University of Technology late on Friday night after reports of a fight. There were conflicting accounts of the cause of his death. Student leaders said he was shot and police said he died of a stab wound. Six students from the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby were wounded by shotgun pellets and rubber bullets when police reacted to a drunken disturbance early on Saturday. The vice-chancellor, Professor John Lynch, said a small group of students had rolled drums across the road and stoned passing vehicles. Police had responded by sending in the riot squad, firing teargas, setting loose dogs and breaking into dormitories.
