165 buried in mining tunnels collapse
NZPA-AP Manila Makeshift mine tunnels caved in during heavy rains in a remote goldmining area of the southern Philippines, burying at least 165 people, officials said yesterday. The disaster, which occurred Tuesday, also triggered a fire that razed 180 houses and killed at least three people, officials said. A military official Initially reported that up to
2000 people were buried by the landslides, but Crispina Abat, operations officer for the Government’s Office of Civil Defence, said the figure represented those rendered homeless by the fire. She said there were no reliable figures on the number of people buried by the landslide on the slopes of Mount Diwalwal in Moncayo, Davao del Norte province, about 930 km southeast of Manila.
