Jet’s fuel low
A TWA airliner stricken by a fuel leak was within 13 minutes of running out of fuel and being forced to ditch into the Pacific when it made an emergency landing in Hawaii,the Federal Aviation Administration said. A spokeswoman in Los Angeles, Elly Brekke, said the Lockheed L-1011, carrying 205 passengers from Los Angeles to Honolulu, had only 1600 kg of fuel left when it touched down at Hilo airport on Monday. The aircraft would normally burn 7250 kg of fuel an hour she said.—NZPA-Reuter. Bomb-murder charges A man who gave himself up to police was charged with murder yesterday after confessing to a bombing 11 years ago in Sydney which killed three people. Evan Pederick, aged 33, surrendered and confessed to planting the bomb in February, 1978, in a garbage bin outside the Hilton Hotel, site of a meeting of the Commonwealth heads of government, the police said Timothy Anderson, aged 36, was granted bail on Tuesday in a Sydney court when he appeared on charges of murdering two garbage collectors and a policeman.—NZPA-Reuter. Rushdie-affair book A book on the Salman Rushdie affair is to be published in spite of the scrapping of a similar publication over fears it might provoke more trouble. The publishers Chatto and Windus said in London that "A Satanic Affair: Salman Rushdie and the Rage of Islam,” by Malise Ruthven, will be on sale in November.—NZPA-PA. Fijian strike A strike at a resort on Fiji’s Coral Coast has disrupted the holidays of more than 130 tourists most of them Australian.
