Call for inquiry
Wellington reporter
The Government’s planned sale of the Rural Bank is messy, according to the Opposition spokesman on agriculture, Mr John Falloon (Pahiatua). He has renewed his call for a public inquiry into matters surrounding the Rural Bank’s sale. The list of contradictions surrounding the matter was growing daily, with denials of documented statements now being common, he said.
These contradictions had convinced him that the only way to restore public confidence in the sale proceedings was to instigate a full public inquiry.. There had been a series of contradictory statements from Cabinet Ministers and the Rural Bank’s chairman, Mr John Shortt.
Mr Falloon has applied under section 12 of the Official Information Act to the Minister for State-Owned Enterprises, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Minister of Finance and the bank chairman for information.
