Maori radio time
Wellington reporter The claim to the Waitangi Tribunal for equal time for Maoris on the airwaves should be withdrawn, according to the Opposition spokesman on broadcasting, Mr Jim Gerard (Rangiora). He was referring to a claim by the Maori Council and the Wellington Maori Language Board. “This claim is patently absurd,” Mr Gerard said.
The claim was motivated by pique, which had been admitted by Professor Whatarangi Winiata when he said the claim had been lodged because of Maoris’ continued exclusion from the broadcasting system. Mr Gerard said there had been no radio or television in 1840 when the Treaty of Waitangi had been signed, and the claim did nothing to foster good race relations.
