Diesel tax pledge
By PATTRICK SMELLIE in Wellington
A National Government would abolish the excise tax on diesel within its first term of office, the Opposition spokeswoman on finance, Miss Ruth Richardson, said in Parliament yesterday. She was responding to a select committee report on a petition from fishing industry interests calling for the abolition of diesel excises.
The select committee chairman, Mr Jim Sutton (Lab., Waitaki), said the committee as a whole endorsed the petition. Estimated revenue for the last financial year from the excise on diesel was $270 million.
The excise is already due to drop 7c a litre from July 1, along with a 4c a litre fall in the petrol excise.
