Politics

Sir, —I have been increasingly concerned at the performance of our parliamentarians from the two main political parties. The old adage, “of the people, by the people, for the people,” keeps springing to mind, indicating where our politicians have almost constantly failed the longsuffering populace of New Zealand. The serious economic and employment situation (need I remind readers again) overshadows, just, the infighting that simmers then boils over regularly. The energy of our leaders and would-be leaders needs to be, more than ever, directed towards the slowing or halting of our sickly road towards Third World status; something which, I feel, most New Zealanders need convincing has yet to occur. What we do not want in our hour of need is the ego-fed, powerhungry divisiveness occurring at ever-increasing intervals. I watch, with interest, the New Labour Party formation and hope, against hope, for a muchimproved calibre of politician — Yours, etc.,

R. W. CARPENTER. May 28, 1989.
