Education
Sir,—The obvious root cause of current concerns about education is that the system is run by the Government with taxpayers’ money. At a time when the Government is wrecking just about everything it touches and cannot even prevent its own political party from self-destruct-ing, it is the height of arrogance for Mr Lange to claim that he and his bureaucrats know better than parents how to bring up and educate their children. If ever there was a candidate for urgent privatisation of a State-owned enterprise, it is education. The user is certainly paying, but he has little or no real choice in or control of the service. Only when parents are firmly in control of their God-given responsibility for their children’s upbringing and training will we see an end to the politicking and social engineering now masquerading as education. —Yours, etc., M. VINEY. May 27, 1989.
