Boxing council okays testing

PA Wellington A sub-committeee to assist with random drug testing at tournaments has been appointed by the Boxing Council. In the leadup to the Commonwealth Games in Auckland next February, leading contenders for. boxing team places will be tested, the council chairman, Brian Tobin, said yesterday. The council has put together a list of 20 names for the sub-committee to test, but it can stray from that if it wishes.

Testing will start at the Golden Gloves tournament in Taupo next month. The sub-committee is Peter Leonard (Timaru), Mick Drury (Christchurch), Ed Johnson (Taupo) and Colin Anderson of Hawke’s Bay. In other news from a Boxing Council meeting in Wellington on Monday, Mr Tobin said a tournament in Australia believed cancelled was on again. A New Zealand team will fly out from Auckland on Sunday to take part. It will compete in Brisbane next Monday and then against an Australian invitation team in the main tourna-

-ment in Sydney three days later. The Hutt Valley lightweight Johnny Wallace, was unavailable for the team because of an eye injury. David Tua, a light heavyweight from Auckland, will represent New Zealand for the first time in Australia. Trevor Shailer, Glen Hodgson, Danny Masterson and David Wickenden will all get their first tast of national representative boxing in the senior grade.
