Road skating relay record

PA Nelson Nelson’s senior women’s relay team of Kim Hippolite, Hayley Kirker and Natasha Sargeant, broke the New Zealand 3000 m relay record on Monday at the road skating championships in Nelson. In an excellent team effort the women took a minute off the old record and beat Christchurch by a comfortable distance. In the senior women’s 3000 m, Debbie Constantine (Auckland) edged past Kim Hippolite to take the race, and complete a four out of five record. Christchurch’s Roger Hawkins retained his New Zealand road championship skating title with a win in the final event. He beat David McFarlane (Auckland) on a track made slippery by light rain, and caution, was the order of the day for a field of

15 skaters. However, Hawkins took off with half a lap to go and held a 2m to 3m lead over McFarlane to the finish line. John Dyett-Carthew (New Plymouth) was third. Leigh-Anne Wiig (Napier) created a New Zealand record when she won the senior women’s title on the first day of the artistic skating championships. It was Wiig’s fifth win in a row, surpassing the sequence of four successive wins set by Auckland skater Jane Ballerini in the 19705, and Beverly Cooper, also of Auckland, in the 19605.
