Red Cross appeal misses mark
Organisers of this month’s Red Cross appeal are pleased with the total raised, even though it was less than hoped. The Red Cross Society had aimed to raise $1 million but received $890,000. The society’s acting secretary-general, Mr Clint Hawke, said the results were pleasing, considering the economic climate. “It’s just great the way the public has responded. Red Cross work doesn’t always have a very high profile but it’s good to know the public appreciates our efforts both in New Zealand and overseas.” Last year the appeal raised $BBO,OOO.
“The fact that this year’s total is $lO,OOO more shows that New Zealanders are willing to give money to a good cause in spite of an economic recession.
The Canterbury branch of the society raised $76,936 in the appeal, less than the $lOO,OOO aimed for.
The appeal co-ordina-tor, Ms Wendy Cammish. said that taking into account the local redundancies and the drought, the branch was pleased with the result.
Half theh money would be used locally and half sent to the national office for the society’s international work, said Ms Cammish.
