Obituary Mr Josef Hangartner
PA Wellington The man who has made many of the candles that burn in New Zealand churches, Mr Josef Hangartner, has died in Wellington, aged 71. Mr Hangartner, a Swiss immigrant and qualified candlemaker, walked off the street into Catholic Supplies in 1950 looking for a job. He made the. candles
sold by Catholic Supplies to Catholic, Anglican and Orthodox churches as well as for hotels, restaurants and shops until near his death earlier this month. One of his candles burned on the coffin at his funeral service at St Mary’s Church in Karori, Wellington. Mr Hangartner is survived by his wife, Margaret. and two sons.
