Baptism decision put on hold

Presbyterian ministers inducted after April 20 will be required to baptise eligible infants until a decision on infant baptism is made at the General Assembly meeting next year. The Special Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand held in Christchurch last week upheld a challenge by the Wellington Presbytery on a decision made by the General Assembly last year allowing ministers to exercise their conscience on the baptism of infants. . This decision was challenged by the Wellington Presbytery before the in-

duction to the Hornby Parish of the Rev. Murray Talbot, a former Southland minister who did not want to perform infant baptisms. The Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery, the Rev. Gladys Burgess, said any further action relating to last year’s decision had been suspended until the issue was considered at the General Assembly. She said the question of whether infants should be baptised was an old one. She said information and discussion papers on the matter would be circulated to all parishes to allow full debate.
