Seven rescued off yacht in high winds
PA Auckland Seven people on a 10.5 metre yacht were towed into Bon Accord Harbour in Kawau Island early yesterday after their engine failed in heavy rain and 50 knot winds. The yacht Pork Chops was motoring from Great Barrier Island to Kawau Island when the engine failed soon after midnight. Crew members fired
two red parachute flares when they feared they would run aground on Martello Rocks near Kawau Island and a privately owned launch responded from Bon Accord Harbour. The Auckland police were also alerted and the Auckland Volunteer Coastguard sent a rescue boat to the area. By the time the coastguard boats arrived the yacht was under
tow back to Bon Accord Harbour. The police say the seven people in the yacht were unharmed. The coastguard said most boaties took notice of the gale warnings on Wednesday and stayed home or on their moorings. Common sense prevailed and in most cases the warnings were not necessary.
