Beer on house for fire crews
A Christchurch hotelier has pledged to put on free beer for the fire-fighters who saved his plush home from the big blaze on the Port Hills on Wednesday.
Mr Stan O’Keefe, owner of Warners Hotel, would have seen his Worsleys Road mansion go up in flames but for the efforts of the men who fought the fire.
"They were fantastic. From the guys who flew the choppers, to the men with chainsaws,” he said yesterday. “There’ll be a few pints of Guinness for these guys.” Mr O’Keefe’s six-year-old home was surrounded by fire in nearby trees. He had resigned himself to the house being destroyed. “I thought if she goes, she goes. We’d taken out some irreplaceable photos and valuables.
“The guys were fantastic. They really slogged their guts out.”
