Champion British trainer fined

NZPA-Reuter London

British champion jumps trainer, David Elsworth, was fined a maxi mum £17,500 ($49,900) after giving a steroid to one of his best horses, Cavvies Clown. Elsworth won the Grand National this year with Rhyme ‘N’ Reason and trains Desert Orchid, favourite for the 1989 Gold Cup, the most prestigious prize in the jumping calendar.

He emerged from a seven-hour inquiry at the headquarters of the Jockey Club, the sport’s ruling body, relieved at escaping a ban. Elsworth said: "A lot of people were predicting I would lose my licence. But it’s been a difficult job and I have had a very fair hearing.”

Cavvies Clown was given a steroid last year on veterinary advice to combat a low blood count. Trainers are allowed to administer medication but it must be clear of the horse’s system when it races. A steroid usually takes three weeks to clear.

Elsworth, aged 49, admitted giving the steroid and was also found guilty of misleading the stewards.
