Testament may take place in feature field

Special correspondent Auckland Testament, contesting the $40,000 weight-for-age feature at the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s meeting tomorrow, became more likely after he galloped at Cambridge yesterday morning. The three-year-old, a ready-made favourite for the Star Way Stakes, was allowed a good hit out on the private track of his trainer, Alan Jones, and, according to reports from the stable, managed it impressively. Testament has a front leg injury which is troubling him but not causing him any soreness. Probably he will need to come through further light work tomorrow morning before Jones confirms a start. It would be a great pity if Testament were to miss the big races of the next few weeks — the Westpark Avondale Guineas, then “New Zealand Herald” Derby — to follow this one because he has looked so good. Under the weight-for-age conditions of the Star Way Stakes he will be carrying 51.5 kg, the lightest weight on any of the runners except for his three-year-old filly stablemate, St Clemens, which has 46.5 kg. With seven wins from nine starts, and beaten only once in six attempts this season, by Krona in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas, Testament is entitled to touch short odds. Last time out, at Te Aroha, he won a 1400 m, beating Olga’s Pal and Krona

very decisively. And after the Guineas at Riccarton he came back to take the Waikato Guineas, over 1600 m, with equal authority. Testament has plenty of speed but whether he will get the pacemaking from St Clemens under her feather weight, or be required to, is doubtful. An English-bred, St Clemens had a bit of ground to make up on her New Zealand three-year-old rivals because of the difference in foaling times. However, she is now beginning to look very smart.

In her last two starts she won a maiden 1200 m at Matamata, on November 22, then last Tuesday a class four 1200, all the way, at Te Rapa. From No. 1 at the start St Clemens could be expected to hare away in front, the question is whether she will last the 1600 m sufficiently well to hold off her older opponents. Catering King, Snabben and Final Aid, all six-year-olds with 58kg, are others besides Testament she will have to beat. Brown Edition, a five-year-old gelding from Hawera, might also get some of the money. That’s Jack, in his first try as far as 2200 m in New Zealand — he finished fourth at the distance in the Grafton Cup (northern New South Wales) last July — is an interesting prospect for the first leg of the double, the G. N. Hill Handicap. A win would almost make certain his place in the field for the D.B. Avondale Cup next Wednesday.
