Teddy rescued from fire
PA Wellington Lower Hutt fire-fighters “rescued” a pink teddy bear from a house fire yesterday. The two-storey Lower Hutt Housing Corporation flat contained a number of stuffed toys which, in the smoke, fire-fighters mistook for young children. Five fire engines, police and Ministry of Transport cars and an ambulance attended the fire. A divisional officer, Mr Laurie Smelgar, said that when fire-fighters arrived at the house about 9.30 a.m.
neighbours believed there was someone in it. The fire-fighters could not find anyone, and so had to be content with rescuing the teddy bear. “It was quite a relief actually,” Mr Smelgar said. A station officer, Mr Jock Delvin, said it was easy to mistake a doll or stuffed toy for a child in a dark, smoky room. There had been cases when firefighters had “rescued” plastic manikins from burning shops, thinking they were humans, he said.
