Heroin presence a worry
PA Auckland
Auckland drug squad detectives are worried about the increasing presence of heroin after a raid on Monday netted 460 g with a street value of $2 million. A Thai national and an Onehunga couple appeared in the District Court at Onehunga yesterday in connection with the raid. The raid, code-named Operation Harmony, was a joint police-customs effort. Police followed a Thai national from Auckland Airport on Sunday after he allegedly brought the heroin into New Zealand on a flight that originated in Thailand. The head of the Auckland drug squad, Detective Inspector Ned Ryan, said the latest raid highlighted the fact that hard drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, were still reaching New Zealand streets. Mr Ryan said there were still “substantial amounts” of heroin not being netted by the police. Worldwide figures showed that only 10 per cent of heroin produced was found. Increased flights to Buenos Aires by Aerolineas Argentinas, and also the start of a new service by Gariida Airlines to Indonesia, were of concern to the police, Mr Ryan said.
