Entry forced to get at fire
Fire-fighters had to break into two St Asaph Street buildings last evening to get at a fire in a yard at the rear.
They were called to the fire at 8.43 p.m. The only access to the yard behind Aquarius Waterbeds, at 417 St Asaph Street, was a narrow alley running alongside the neighbouring building. Other buildings backed on to the yard. To get water and access to the seat of the fire, men wearing breathing apparatus went through the waterbed factory and the neighbouring building. Four engines, a snorkel, a control car and a staff car were sent to the blaze. The snorkel was used to set up a water curtain to protect a neighbouring building. Fire-safety officers and the C. 1.8. were last evening investigating the cause of the fire, which burnt part of the rear of the waterbed factory.
Paint and cylinders were stored at the rear of the factory and staff of New Zealand Industrial Gases were called in to examine and make safe the cylinders.
Ambulances stood by in St Asaph Street and Tuam Street but were not needed.
