Kiwifruit ‘needs bees’
PA Hamilton Honey bees were essential for kiwifruit pollination and growers would take a big risk by not using them, said a Ruakura apiculturist, Dr Mark Goodwin. The effectiveness of honey bees has been questioned by Auckland zoologists Mr John Craig
and Ms Anne Stewart who ask whether the approximately $4 million spent on bees each year could be saved because wind was the better pollinator. “There is evidence that honey bees do pollinate kiwifruit and it is a big risk if they are not used,” he said.
